24.May.2010 Thai officials extend holidays at violence-stricken capital

The Thailand government has decided to extend the holidays in the capital city of Bangkok – at least for its agencies in a bid to keep the civilians off the streets until the end of this week.
Government agencies and schools have been informed to order its staff to extend their holidays for a week. They are expected to be back at the offices by Monday next week.
The decision happened when the government did not accept the call for a ceasefire from the red shirts protesters. The clashes among the protesters and the soldiers have been going on for nearly a week. There were 38 people reportedly dead and 279 wounded from this ordeal.
The Red shirt leaders have come up with two proposals in order to have this compromise, including mediation coming from United Nations or the Thailand’s Senate speaker. However, these have been rejected by the government – branding such as “nonsense.”
