24.May.2010 Thai officials extend holidays at violence-stricken capital

The Thailand government has decided to extend the holidays in the capital city of Bangkok – at least for its agencies in a bid to keep the civilians off the streets until the end of this week.

Government agencies and schools have been informed to order its staff to extend their holidays for a week. They are expected to be back at the offices by Monday next week.

The decision happened when the government did not accept the call for a ceasefire from the red shirts protesters. The clashes among the protesters and the soldiers have been going on for nearly a week. There were 38 people reportedly dead and 279 wounded from this ordeal.

The Red shirt leaders have come up with two proposals in order to have this compromise, including mediation coming from United Nations or the Thailand’s Senate speaker. However, these have been rejected by the government – branding such as “nonsense.”

Hong Kong-based Lulu Holidays announced that they have opened the above-mentioned facilities in Koh Samu in Thailand.

13.May.2010 Local operators confident UK holidays still top choice among residents

British operators are confident that local residents will still consider UK holidays as their preferred choice to spend quality vacation time rather than going overseas.

Allan Lambert, the head of retail sales for holiday parks Bourne Leisure, said that based on the survey his group conducted recently, local residents are still planning to conduct vacations within the country due to a number of tourist spots that they could visit in neighboring towns.

About 53 percent of the respondents said that spending UK holidays fit their budget while 28 percent believes that doing so means saving money.

The Abta UK Leisure Group echoed this reports stating that the demand for local holiday cruises was higher this year as there’s as the company’s agents continue to promote this type of vacation package than going overseas. The company officials said that they have encouraged their agents to continue with this strategy.

11.May.2010 Irish tycoon faces multiple cases over Turkish holiday rental scams

The Public Prosecution Service is mulling where it would continue filing multiple charges to Irish property tycoon Kevin O’Kane after his alleged participation in a multi-million dollar scam involving holiday rentals in Turkey. According to reports, several families lost thousands of dollars with this scam.

The authorities are determining whether they have enough evidences to prosecute O’Kane. More than eighty families have been cheated out of their holiday home rentals on the Aegean coast.

The families have invested money for properties in Turkey. However, they discovered that the properties were never their own.  O’Kane’s firm Anka has spearheaded the sales of those properties in Turkey.

O’Kane maintained that he has no idea with the illegal dealings and stressed that he’s also a victim himself. However, the victims refused to believe him and continued with the civil case.

British girls won’t have problems going topless on beaches, provided that it is not done during their UK holidays but whenever they are out of the country. Bikinis are the swimwear of choice for British girls but they wont be wearing them for very long.

According to a survey conducted by Debenhams, more than half of the respondents say that they can take their tops off when they are on a foreign holiday. However, it was a different way around whenever they are in one of their UK holidays.

The major reason why they won’t do it in their home turf is the fear that they might be recognized by someone that they know.

About a third of the one thousand respondents surveyed by the retail giant said that they feel comfortable going topless abroad because most foreign men are used to these scenario.

A representative for Debenhams said that based on their local sales, British beaches are bound to look like a set in the fifties with women wearing conservative swimwear.

A new research released by Leger Holidays revealed that those availing of singles holidays are not only composed of those who are not in relationships.

The demographic showed that there are couples who decide to spend holidays separately because they have not agreed when it comes to where to go during their annual vacation breaks.

Leger Holidays polled more than a thousand respondents before coming up with this conclusion.

Most of the couples they interviewed said that they have different preferences when it comes to spending the holidays and have come to a mutual decision to spend it separately for the meantime. This does not mean, however, that they have ended their relationship.

Some of the couples believe that this is a welcome development since they have not spent some alone time during the relationship.

The data revealed that women are more cautious when it comes to availing of singles holidays than men.

19.Apr.2010 £5 million suit filed against major holidays company

More than six hundred tourists have jointly filed a £5 million suit against First Choice Holidays after stating that they became ill at a four-star resort that they stayed in a couple of years ago.

According to the suit, the guests were served uncooked chicken. They also swam in the pools at the Holiday Village Hotel in Sarigerme, Turkey that is already contaminated with human feces.

The suit was filed at the High Court in London. The court said that First Choice has already admitted its liability for the supliers’ negligence two years ago. The travel firm, located in Crawley, West Sussex, has given its commitment in increasing the safety checks in its suppliers.

The case is currently ongoing and developments will be announced in the coming weeks.

First Choice Holidays has yet to release an official statement about the matter.

18.Mar.2010 Missouri governor plans to axe three day holidays

There will be lesser number in the list of holidays for this year if Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s plan will be approved.

According to reports, Nixon is planning to scrap three state holidays as a part of the belt-tightening procedures he’d implement to boost state revenues.
Nixon plans to remove Truman Day on May 8, the day after Thanksgiving, among others.

Truman Day is celebrated in honor of the only Missouri-based President of the United States. This year, the holiday has been scheduled on May 7 instead of 8 because the latter falls on a weekend.

Nixon said that each holiday costs the state about 1.2 million dollars due to overtime and other compensations given to employees due to holidays. He said that it is a difficult decision for him but something has to be done.

Budget Director Linda Luebbering said that if the move pushes through, the state will save more than $3 million each year.
